Hortus Botanicus dates from 1682, and provides a green and peaceful oasis. The impressive Botanical Gardens houses over 6,000 plant species from all around the world, with plants deriving from every climate and continent, with climate-controlled glass houses.
Hortus Botanicus was established here originally as an herb garden for doctors and pharmacists over three hundred years ago. The East India Company's ships brought back exotic seeds and plants from other countries that they traded with.
There is also a medicinal herb garden that attracts students from all over the world and visitors can view one of the world's oldest potted plants.
Visitors to Hortus Botanicus in the springtime can enjoy the thousands of tulips that give a blaze of intense colour.
